Professor Jorge Zornberg joined delegates in Athens to give a lecture on behalf of the IGS Ambassadors Program.
Prof. Zornberg spoke on ‘Geosynthetic applications in railways and roadways’ at the 9th Hellenic Conference on Geotechnical Engineering, hosted by the Hellenic Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (HSSMGE). Members of IGS Greece, which facilitated Prof. Zornberg’s appearance, had the chance to share perspectives of the Greek chapter, as well as learn about the IGS Educate the Educators program, which IGS Greece is planning to implement in the near future.
The IGS Ambassadors Program aims to widen awareness about geosynthetics and the work of the IGS, by supporting chapters and building relationships at worldwide events.
Christos Stratakos, Secretary of IGS Greece, said: “Prof. Zornberg’s presentation was excellent, and the feedback we had from the participants, members of the geotechnical community in Greece, was more than enthusiastic. We would like to thank the IGS and Prof. Zornberg for their help and support in organizing this event.”
The 9th Hellenic Conference on Geotechnical Engineering took place in Athens, from October 4-6. It welcomed 380 delegates, and included 120 papers, 15 invited lectures and 15 exhibitors.
Among the 17 sessions, one focused on ‘Applications of geosynthetic materials’, in which IGS Greece members presented the following papers:
- ‘Study of physical, mechanical and geochemical properties of thermally modified bentonite in GCL applications’ by Velli P, Argyraki A, Kollios A, Zotiadis V.
- ‘Models for strength estimation of fiber-reinforced soils under undrained loading conditions’ by Evangelou E, Michail A, Markou I, Bantralexis K.
- ‘Laboratory determination of the shear strength of soils reinforced with fibers’ by Evangelou E, Verykaki S, Markou I, Bantralexis K.
- ‘Use of geosynthetics at the works for the certification of runway strip and runway end safety areas (RESA) according to EASA regulations’ by Stratakos Ch, Fikiris I.
