The Koerner Family has announced the passing of Robert M. Koerner and his wife Pauline W. Koerner. Together with Paula, Bob founded the Geosynthetics Institute (GSI) as a research organization with international outreach programs for the design of geosynthetic materials in construction. They are survived by three children: Michael (wife Mary) Koerner, George (wife Jamie) Koerner, and Pauline (husband Doug) Limberg, and six grandchildren.
Bob was a long-standing member of the IGS and was awarded honorary membership in 2008 at the first Pan-American Geosynthetics Conference (GeoAmericas). A true educator, researcher, and innovator in our discipline, Bob was Professor Emeritus of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bob has also authored and co-authored over 750 papers on Geosynthetics and geotechnical topics in journals and at national and international conferences. His most widely used publication is his book entitled “Designing with Geosynthetics” now in its sixth edition. His significant contributions in the development of geosynthetics engineering technology will always be remembered and he will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Koerner Family during this difficult time.
