A pioneering geosynthetics expert who dedicated five decades to our industry passed away in February.
Peter Davies contributed to the use and understanding of geosynthetics for 55 years, spending several years on the board of GIGSA, including in the role of Vice President.
GIGSA President Charl Cilliers said: “We will remember Peter for the kindness he showed in the time spent lecturing and mentoring young professionals in our industry. He had tremendous practical knowledge, and was highly respected in our field, often called upon to serve on conference technical committees.
“Peter was highly inquisitive and displayed intense energy when investigating, learning and teaching all subjects related to geosynthetics. His enquiring mind was contagious and his passion for geosynthetics has been passed on to many in our industry.
“Peter was an honorary life member of GIGSA and we will always remember the impact he had in our field.”
Kaytech Engineered Fabrics also released a tribute which described Peter as a ‘true pioneer’ and ‘stalwart’ of the industry.
The statement said: “Peter’s contributions have left a lasting mark not only on Kaytech but on the geosynthetics community at large.
“He dedicated himself tirelessly to advancing geotechnical engineering and geosynthetics. His expertise and passion were evident in every facet of his work, from consulting on geosynthetic applications to educating and mentoring countless individuals within the industry.
“As a Senior Fellow and former President of the South African Institute of Waste Management (IWMSA), Peter played a pivotal role in shaping waste management practices and standards in South Africa. His leadership and guidance were instrumental in various waste-related initiatives, including the development of Minimum Requirements for Waste Management Facilities.
“Beyond his professional achievements, Peter’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering
dedication to his family and community will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a loving family, including his wife Janet, children Peter and Genevieve, and cherished grandchildren.
“Peter’s impact on the geosynthetics industry and the lives he touched will be felt for years to come. His legacy serves as a beacon of inspiration for us all, reminding us to strive for excellence, to share our knowledge generously, and to approach every challenge with integrity and passion.”
