Nearly 800 attendees, 130 presentations, 39 breakout sessions and three keynotes added up to a successful 5th GeoAmericas conference.
Organized by IGS North America, the four-day event in Toronto, Canada, saw a return to the in-person format after the Covid pandemic diverted 4th GeoAmericas online.
Attendees came from more than 46 countries, and included at least 36 students and 70 exhibitors.
The conference theme ‘Connecting state of the art to state of practice’ was explored with prestigious keynote speakers Dr. Beth Gross who talked about ‘Barrier systems, waste trends and coming challenges’, the 2nd Zornberg Lecture delivered by Vinicius Benjamim and Victor Pimentel on ‘Contrasts and opportunities for geosynthetics in the Americas’, and a Mining & Geomembranes Plenary discussion with Harvey McLeod, Michel Julien and Kerry Rowe.
Further highlights included an engaging IGS Diversity Task Force Lunch with speaker Dr. Imogen R. Coe on ‘Embracing diversity to drive innovation and leverage talent’, and a lively debate where Professors Jorge Zornberg and Tim Stark offered opposing views on the cause of a geomembranes issue, where the audience found in favor of Dr. Stark by a single vote.
IGS Young Members also had plenty to discover, including enjoying a social dinner, and the inaugural GeoJeopardy geosynthetics quiz where student teams battled it out over the course of the conference. The final, staged live at the Gala Dinner, saw a team from IGS Brazil win top spot over a team from the University of Texas at Austin.
The GeoJeopardy contest at GeoAmericas 2024 was the first such event after a similar but more informal event with teams made up of young and more experienced members at GeoAfrica last year. Its success and popularity will ensure the IGS will continue this conference feature into the future.
Conference co-chair Joseph Scalia praised the conference’s rich programme and said one of his main highlights was the value delivered to students.
“We were able to bring students together with the knowledge-leaders in our field, a chance to meet and interact to enable greater collaboration and to build a network you can’t build virtually,” he said.
“With the GeoJeopardy quiz it was incredible to see the students willing to get out there in front of those geosynthetics leaders, they did an amazing job,” he said.
He continued: “It was also wonderful to see a much more practitioner-heavy keynote set with speakers such as Dr. Beth Gross on geo-environmental engineering, and the Zornberg lecturers did an exquisite job giving a Latin-American perspective.
Dr. Scalia also said he was excited for GeoAmericas 2028, announced at the conference to be hosted by IGS Colombia in Cartagena, and was also looking forward to the 13th International Conference on Geosynthetics in Montreal in 2026, which will again be organized by IGS North America.
“IGS North America will take the momentum and lessons from GeoAmericas 2024 and build an incredible technical program for Montreal,” he said.
