Tributes have been paid to the work and impact of the IGS Foundation (IGSF) as it celebrates five years of supporting geosynthetics education.
Established in 2019 to expand the learning initiatives of the IGS, the Foundation has been dedicated to widening the understanding, and promote the appropriate use, of geosynthetic technology globally.
Under the leadership of Foundation Chairman Jacques Cote, the IGSF recruited an initial 16 founding members who together donated more than $100,000. Since then, repeat and new donors have enabled the IGSF to provide an expanding programme of initiatives, and to respond to many different grant requests, from individual students to Chapter level.
Activity over the last five years has included:
- Supporting seven Educate the Educators (EtE) events facilitating more than 300 professors to teach geosynthetics in their respective engineering communities.
- Enabling more than 240 students to attend geosynthetic technical conferences.
- Placing more than 90 students on the IGS Job Shadowing Program and other project/site visits to learn the capabilities of geosynthetic materials.
- Digitizing 20 or more hours of geosynthetic knowledge for web use including the EtE lecture, as well as others on transportation, containment, hydraulic and sustainability topics.
- Sponsoring and supporting IGS Diversity Task Force (now a Committee) initiatives.
- Supporting the creation of a new IGS Handbook, and other initiatives to expand geosynthetics use.
The Foundation’s first act of funding was providing scholarships for 19 students to attend the GeoAmericas 2020 conference virtually. One of those recipients was Juliana Reinert, who explains the impact this made at the time and on her future career.
“The grant gave me the opportunity to engage with a prestigious event and connect with peers in the geosynthetics community. At the time, this experience was invaluable, broadening my perspective and reinforcing my professional growth,” she said.
“More importantly, between GeoAmericas 2020 and GeoAmericas 2024, I made a pivotal decision to transition my career from academia to public policy. The exposure and networking opportunities from events of that magnitude played a crucial role in my career development, ultimately influencing my path.
“Today, I am a Policy Advisor at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), and I recognize how impactful that initial opportunity was in shaping my professional journey.”
Donations also allowed the Foundation to finance the creation of an eye-catching handbook to help IGS Chapters set up IGS Job Shadowing Programs tailored to the needs of their members. Funding was also available for related expenses such as providing lunch or travel costs.
Involved with these initiatives at the time as part of the IGS Young Members Committee were Dawie Marx and Preston Kendall.
Mr Marx said: “In its first five years the IGS Foundation opened the world of geosynthetics to young engineers and researchers. The generous financial assistance from the Foundation allowed these young members to attend international conferences and present their work to the global community.”
Mr Kendall added: “The strong support from the IGSF has had a meaningful impact on the Job Shadowing initiative and it has been rewarding to see the benefit to young students as they consider careers in geosynthetics.”
The Foundation also supported the creation of a digital version of the IGS Educate the Educators’ ‘Introduction to geosynthetics’ lecture. Traditionally delivered in-person, the lectures were reimagined as bite-size virtual lessons allowing global, on-demand access.
Professor Maria das Graças Gardoni, Vice-President of IGS Brazil, who co-delivered the video with former IGS President Professor Jorge Zornberg, said: “IGS Brazil thanks the IGSF for its contribution. The initiative’s impact on its audience, users and creators has been significant.
“I also want to highlight the Foundation’s generous contribution to our Chapter’s first regional geosynthetics symposium – GEOSSINT North, which took place in Manaus, Amazonia, earlier this year.
“The results of this symposium are resonating throughout Brazil, due to its unique format and the awareness about geosynthetics raised among local companies, government bodies and academia. Due to the event’s success, the second GEOSSINT North will take place over two days in September, this year.
“IGS Brazil is very grateful and congratulates the IGSF for the essential work it is carrying out with IGS Chapters.”
The IGSF’s Boyd Ramsey said: “The Board is proud to mark five years of the Foundation and celebrate the projects and individuals we have assisted, for the benefit of the industry and society as a whole. I’d like to thank our supporters and donors as none of this would be possible without their generosity. We look forward to continuing our mission and welcoming new supporters to help us help the industry thrive.”
