Three passionate proponents of geosynthetics were recognized for their hand in creating the Australasian Chapter of the IGS (ACigs).
Founding Fathers Fred Gassner, Malek Bouazza and Mike Sadlier were given honorary membership at the Chapter’s recent annual meeting, in recognition of their key roles setting up ACigs more than 20 years ago.
The trio are the first in a series of individuals due to be honored at the Chapter’s forthcoming annual meetings.
The idea for the ACigs chapter was nurtured by Fred, Malek and Mike in the late 1990s as interest in geosynthetics started to grow in Australasia. As popularity, support and membership improved, ACigs was born and formally ratified in 2002. Professor Bouazza was the organization’s first President, with Mr Sadlier as Vice-President and Mr Gassner as Treasurer. All have continued to be active members in the life of the Chapter.
Current ACigs President Graham Fairhead said: “We’re extremely grateful for the work and vision of our Founding Fathers, and this honor is a small way of recognizing that. The work of people like Fred, Malek and Mike has been an inspiration, and continues to inform the way our strong and ambitious Chapter grows and succeeds.”
