The Eighth National Conference on Geosynthetics (G8) was held on 16-17 May 2019 at Bogazici University in Istanbul-Turkey. The National Conference was organized by the Turkish Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS-TC) and was one of the main activities of the chapter in 2019. The G8 Conference aims to share knowledge and experience and to discuss the problems and solution suggestions by bringing together producers, practitioners and scientists working in Turkey on geosynthetics including geotextile, geogrid, geomembrane and geocomposite products.
In the Opening Session of the Conference, Erol Güler representing the Turkish Chapter of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) made the first speech. The second speech was given by Ayşe Edinçliler as the president of IGS-TC and chairman of the conference.

After a short opening session, the professional part of the conference started by two invited lectures. The first invited lecture was given by IGS Vice President Dr. Nathalie Touze. It focused on “Geomembranes over GCLs: The Optimal Combination for Barriers against Contaminant Transport”. Afterwards, the second invited lecture was given by Assoc.Prof. Burak Tanyu (George Mason University, USA) on “Use of Recycled Concrete Aggregate in Geotransportation Infrastructures with Geosynthetics”. On the first day of the conference (May 16, 2019), three Technical Sessions (13 Papers) and a panel, ”Geosynthetics in Mining”, with four technical presentations.were held.

During the second day of the conference, Helmut Zanzinger (SKZ – Testing GmbH, Würzburg, Germany) informed about “Laboratory Testing on Geogrids and Geocells used for the Function Stabilisation”. There was also 20 papers that was presented in three technical sessions.

More than 130 participants attended the conference with 40 oral presentations (3 invited Lectures + 33 presentations + 4 Panel presentations) on different topics such as geotechnical structures, seismic applications, environmental applications, case studies, in situ and laboratory tests, ground improvements and reinforced walls with geosynthetics. The G8 Conference brought together 82 professionals from universities, public institutions, designers, manufacturers and the private sector working on geosynthetics.
One of the most important developments in the G8 Conference is the increase in the participation of graduate and undergraduate students in the Conference compared to other conferences. 46 students from different universities attending the conference was a success of the G8.
The conference ended with a closing session. The executive committee members of IGS-TC, Ayşe Edinçliler (President), Erol Güler (Past president), Hakan Özçelik (Secretary General) and Elif Callan (Treasurer) and IGS Vice present, Nathalie Touze expressed their opinions about the conference and the future works of the IGS-TC:
When G8 Conference is compared to previous National Conferences on Geosynthetics (G1-G7) held biennially, the G8 Conference is very successful. The success of the G8 Conference was not only the number of papers, but also the fact that the research and application studies that were the subject of the presentations were important studies contributing to the literature at the international level.
The evaluations about the conference showed that the conference met the expectations of the organizers and participants.

As organization committee, we were very pleased to welcome Dr. Nathalie Touze, IGS Vice President, for her participation and contributions to our conference.
Finally, the announcement of the Ninth National Geosynthetics Conference, planned for 2021, was announced.
