The Egyptian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGSE) hosted a workshop on the “Development of Geosynthetics Practice in Egypt.” The workshop was held on 28th & 29th of January 2020 at the Housing and Building Research Center, Dokki, Giza, Egypt. The workshop presented a multitude of opportunities for the Geosynthetics society (including consultants, contractors, and material and equipment manufacturers, as well as academics, and researchers). This event was held under the endorsement of the International Geosynthetics Society, IGS, and the auspices of Housing and Building Research Center, HBRC, and the sponsorship of: Bonar, Geos, Geotech, Huesker, Rowad, and Strata.
The steering committee of the workshop were: Prof. Nagwa El Sakhawy, Prof. Manal Abdelsalam Salem, and Dr. Mohamed Salah. The workshop was a great success in many aspects. Over 100 participants attended the workshop. Seven lectures were presented by international and national speakers as well as a panel discussion, exhibition, and a site visit to an important project in Great Cairo.
A board meeting was held after the end of the first day of the Workshop. The attendees were Prof. Chungsik Yoo, Mr. Edoardo Zannoni, Prof. Fatma Baligh, Prof. Nagwa El Sakhawy, Prof. Adel Mahmoud Belal, Prof. Marawan Shahien, Dr. Sameh Abu Elsoud, Prof. Rami El-Sherbiny, Prof. Manal Salem, Eng. Abdelaziz El-Nahhas, and Eng. John Erian Maher. The meeting was held mainly to discuss preparations for the GeoAfrica Conference that is expected to be held in October 2021.
On the second day of the workshop, a site visit was sponsored by Bonar Natpet. The visit was to a construction site of “Pyramids Heights Compound” located on Cairo Alexandrea Desert Road. About twenty participants attended the workshop accompanied by Mr. Ehab Fouad, Prof. Chungsik Yoo, Mr. Edoardo Zannoni, Prof. Rami El-Sherbiny, Prof. Manal Salem, and Eng. John Erian Maher. The attendees got the chance to see few mechanically stabilized earth walls with heights ranging from about 4 to 12m.
