IGS Council
About The Council
The IGS Council is responsible for the management of the Society in accordance with its bylaws, objectives and policies. Meeting at least once a year, it sets IGS’s working program and supervises the finances. The Council consists of 10-16 Elected Members, excluding the President and Vice President, and up to five Co-opted Members, and a number of Invited Members. All are drawn from – and representative of – the IGS membership. There are five elected Council Officers: President, Vice-President, Immediate Past President, Secretary and Treasurer.

IGS Officers
Sam Allen
IGS President
Mr. Sam Allen is the Director of the TRI Environmental Group (TRI), a globally active, independent geosynthetic laboratory and research services provider. His work over the past 35 years has involved significant interaction with public and private entities around the world giving him a strong understanding of the needs in world regions for geosynthetics, infrastructure, and sustainability.
Edoardo Zannoni
IGS Vice President
Mr. Edoardo Zannoni is a Senior Civil Engineer at Knight Piesold Southern Africa, working on projects across the continent. He was previously Secretary General of the IGS and President of the Geosynthetics Interest Group of South Africa.
Laura Carbone
IGS Secretary General
Dr. Laura Carbone is an Application Manager at Freudenberg Performance Materials in Germany. She has actively served the IGS for 10 years. She co-founded the IGS Young Members Committee in 2012 and was the past Chair of the European Regional Activities Committee. She is the founder and current Chair of the IGS Diversity task force.
Jie Han
IGS Treasurer
Dr. Jie Han is the Glenn L. Parker Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Kansas in the USA. Dr. Han served as an elected IGS council member from 2018 to 2022 and led two task forces to develop the IGS Digital Library and the IGS University Lecture Series.
Chungsik Yoo
IGS Immediate Past President
Dr. Chungsik Yoo is a Chair Professor at the School of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University in Korea. Chungsik is President of the Federation for International Geo-Engineering Societies (FedIGS), an umbrella organisation of which the IGS is a member. He is also Immediate Past President of the Korean Geosynthetics Society, and Vice-President of the Korean Tunnelling and Underground Society.
