Eighteen areas of geosynthetics will be explored through the lens of sustainability at the upcoming eighth Asian Regional Conference on Geosynthetics (GeoAsia8).
Themed ‘Geosynthetics: pioneering lasting solutions for the Earth’, hosts ACigs, the Australasian Chapter of the IGS, is developing a comprehensive program in preparation for the event in Brisbane, Australia, on June 10-13, 2025.
Topics will include:
- Sustainability with geosynthetics.
- Geosynthetics properties and testing.
- Soil-geosynthetic interaction.
- Durability and long-term performance.
- Reinforced walls and slopes.
- Basal reinforced embankments, GEC, piles and shallow foundations.
- Seismic design with geosynthetics.
- Unpaved and paved roads.
- Railways and other transportation applications.
- Landfills and remediation of contaminated sites.
- Filtration and drainage.
- Erosion control and coastal applications.
- Hydraulic applications: canals, reservoirs and dams.
- Innovative materials and technologies.

Amir Shahkolahi, conference co-chair and chair of the conference Advisory Committee, said preparations were going well.
“The Advisory Committee, which includes leaders from all Asian chapters, has held several meetings to discuss the program, keynote speakers, and the specific requirements of different Chapters. The organizing committee is working diligently to manage various aspects of the event, including workshops, special sessions, keynote addresses, student awards, and award lectures.
“The program highlights include keynote lectures featuring prominent local Asia-Pacific speakers, as well as workshops and panel discussions with experts from around the world.
“Additionally, we are continuously coordinating with immigration services to expedite the visa application process for attendees.”
Mr Shahkolahi, who is also chair of the IGS Asian Regional Activities Committee, added it had received a substantial number of abstracts and review by the Technical Committees was underway.
Registration is now open with early bird discounts running until February 10, 2025. Sponsorship and exhibition opportunities are also available.
Mr Shahkolahi said: “GeoAsia8 presents a valuable opportunity for all members, manufacturers, distributors, and professionals from related fields, not only within Asia but globally, to connect and engage with one another.
“Participants will have the chance to share their experiences, hear from experts they might not have encountered before, and gain insights into the current and future geosynthetics market in Asia, including its unique achievements and opportunities.
“Additionally, attendees can enjoy a memorable holiday with their families in one of the world’s most beautiful and safest destinations, with its unique attractions and natural wonders.”
He also emphasised ACigs was merely facilitating the event on behalf of all Asian Chapters and welcomed input from all countries in the region, not just Australia.
“We welcome and value any comments and ideas that could contribute to making GeoAsia8 a successful and unique event. We invite all interested members to reach out and get involved, becoming a part of this exciting opportunity and event,” he said.
