The IGS is developing guidance and support to help organizers of IGS and IGS-related events make them more diverse.
Creating a more diverse IGS, industry and market is a key goal for the IGS, detailed in its Strategy Report 2022-2026, with being ‘Representative’ one of the four strategic priorities. This means growing the number of individual, student and corporate members, especially in under-represented demographics and markets, supporting Chapters through more flexible membership models and governance, widening education and career opportunities, and ensuring a more accessible, safe, and inclusive working environment.
Plans are still being formulated but it is expected that future proposals to host IGS events and regional conferences will include a section on how the applicant will be incorporating diversity and representation into their program. The IGS and its new Diversity Task Force (TF) will also be available to help with guidance and advice on formulating a more inclusive experience.
In April, this year, the IGS formed the Diversity TF and marked the occasion at a launch event followed at the 12th International Conference on Geosynthetics in Rome, Italy, in September, where speakers shared their personal experiences and identified opportunities to improve diversity.
TF lead and IGS Secretary General, Laura Carbone said: “Among our goals is to increase the ethnic diversity of key contributors at all IGS events as well as raise the number of IGS Keynote addresses presented by women professionals. It’s ambitious but the IGS is serious about changing things for the better.”
IGS President Sam Allen said: “We want to ensure all our events address our strategic goal of being more Representative, as well as being inclusive, accessible and mindful of the diverse needs of our global membership. It’s because of this we must hold organizers accountable in the way they formulate and deliver their events, to ensure going forward diversity is embedded into all IGS activities, and not just an afterthought.”
