Discover the impact of Japanese innovation on the development of geosynthetics when Dr. Fumio Tatsuoka gives his IGS 40th Birthday Week Lecture on Thursday, November 9. REGISTER HERE
The talk, titled ‘Geosynthetic-reinforced soils structures for the last 40 years in Japan‘, is set to show how these structures with unique features were developed in Japan. Learn the origins of this development, the projects and applications it supported, including the country’s iconic high speed railways, and how these structures were constructed.
Dr. Tatsuoka, a former IGS President and whose significant contribution to geosynthetics was recognized by the IGS with the establishment of the Fumio Tatsuoka Lecture last year, will conclude with an update on how these structures have been performing 40 years later, and the related benefits.
The talk by Dr. Tatsuoka, who is Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo and Tokyo University of Science, takes place at 10am Tokyo time (1am UTC), with moderator Chungsik Yoo.
It is just one of a series of exclusive lectures running between November 6-10, marking four decades of the IGS. The talks are an opportunity to reflect on where the IGS has come from and its ambitions for the future. The series culminates in a not-to-miss talk by geosynthetics pioneer J.P. Giroud on November 10 – the IGS’s birthday – hosted by IGS President Sam Allen.
The week also includes ‘Ask the Officer’ sessions with all five of the IGS Officers, where IGS members have the chance to send in pre-submitted questions answered live. Questions should be sent to IGS Secretariat-Manager Elise Oatman at igssec@geosyntheticssociety.org.
