Hear the fascinating journey of geosynthetics in two global regions at two talks for the IGS 40th Birthday Week Lectures. REGISTER HERE
Dr. Huabei Liu, secretary of IGS China, will speak about ‘Geosynthetics in China: history, manufacturing, and applications’, while Jabulile Msiza, from IGS South Africa, will explore ‘African case studies and opportunities’, both on Wednesday, November 8.
Dr. Huabei, professor of engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, will offer a brief history of geosynthetic application and manufacturing in mainland China, followed by the applications of various types of geosynthetics in the sectors of water conservancy and water resources engineering, transportation, and environmental protection.
The development of geosynthetic products and their manufacturing, and geosynthetics innovation in China will also be covered, as well as thoughts for the future.
Ms Msiza, who is the lead member for the IGS Africa Middle-East Regional Activities Committee, will focus on ‘African case studies and opportunities’.
You can hear Dr. Liu at 5pm China time (9am UTC), moderated by John Kraus, and Ms Msiza speak at 2pm South Africa time (12pm UTC) with the talk moderated by Laura Carbone.
The talks are part of a series of exclusive lectures between November 6-10, marking four decades of the IGS. The talks are an opportunity to reflect on where the IGS has come from and its ambitions for the future. The series culminates in a not-to-miss lecture by geosynthetics pioneer J.P. Giroud on November 10 – the IGS’s birthday – hosted by IGS President Sam Allen.
The week also includes ‘Ask the Officer’ sessions with all five of the IGS Officers, where IGS members have the chance to send in pre-submitted questions answered live. Questions should be sent to IGS Secretariat-Manager Elise Oatman at igssec@geosyntheticssociety.org.
