Members will be spoilt for choice with an abundance of IGS initiatives, opportunities and events coming up in 2023.
The newly elected 20th IGS Council met on December 8 where its committees reported on plans so far. Officers also approved next year’s budget and reappointed the IGS Foundation board of trustees for 2023. Plus, IGS South Africa’s bid to host GeoAfrica5 was approved. It will take place in Gauteng, South Africa, at a date to be confirmed.
All committees reiterated their commitment to regular initiatives such as holding webinars, creating educational assets, attending conferences and growing membership.

The IGS Young Members Committee also has plenty on the cards to inspire its members, including the IGS Student Awards, growing the IGS Job Shadowing Program, and holding the Young Members competition at the 12th ICG. The Committee is also keen to improve diversity among its membership, facilitate greater participation of young members at conferences, and increase collaboration with sister societies.
Learning continues to be a key theme into next year, and the IGS Education Committee is focused on creating the IGS Geosynthetics Handbook, developing design credentials and design course modules, as well as refreshing technical materials and documents in the IGS Digital Library.
With sustainability a driving force for the IGS, the Sustainability Committee is continuing its education outreach work. This includes developing a Sustainability Benefits Calculator, hosting a session at the 12th ICG, and carrying out a second survey of IGS members’ sustainability policies.
Corporate Members also have plenty to get involved in next year, including a case study contest at GeoAfrica4, a world case study contest and awards at the 12th ICG, plans to extend membership in less well-represented areas like India and China, and also to distributors and installers. The Corporate Committee also wants to develop credentialing for geosynthetics professionals including Corporate Member employees, and improve collaboration with industry associations such as the European Association of Geosynthetic Product Manufacturers, Geosynthetic Materials Association, and the Brazilian Association of Technical Nonwoven Industries.
2023 will be a busy year so get involved!
