With sadness, we announce the passing of Pete Stevenson. Pete served as the first IGS Treasurer at its foundation in 1983 and remained an IGS Officer until the 9 ICG in Brazil in 2010. He spent 27 years with the society and was instrumental in the worldwide diffusion of the IGS.
Peter Edward Stevenson was born on May 6, 1940, in Lockport, NY. The son of the late Edward Leroy Stevenson and the late Mary Gaskill passed away on Sunday October 17, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, son Michael Stevenson and daughters Tina Severson (Ron), Nicole Sayre (Gary) and Tara Hermans (Stephen Tilson) and nine grandchildren, Catherine (Houston), Alex, Lillian, Madelyn, Garrett, RJ, Samantha, Shelby, and Mia.
He graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy in 1958, Columbia University in 1962 and the master’s program at Stern School of Business, NY University in 1976. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1961 and served in Vietnam. He remained in the USMC Reserves retiring in 1986 at the rank of Major.
He was actively involved in the textile industry from 1966 until 2015. He worked in reinforcement products in the boating and automotive applications. Returning to technical products with a main interest in soil reinforcements known as geogrids and geotextiles he is the holder of three patents on geosynthetics. He was also the founder of two geosynthetic manufacturing firms. For 27 years he worked jointly with Rosemary in the service of the International Geosynthetics Society holding positions as Secretary and Treasurer.
He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Luke and was an active Knight of Columbus. Among his many interests he was Commander of the Lake Hartwell Sail and Power Squadron, a member of Task Force 25 of AASHTO on soil reinforcements, chair of the nonwoven industry (INDA) Geosynthetic Interest Group, a member of the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) board of directors, editor of an ASTM STP on testing and enjoyed participating in the marine survey profession as an accredited member of the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS).
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday October 28, 2021, at 12:15 pm at the Catholic Church of St. Luke Easley, SC. An honors internment ceremony will be held at 3pm at MJ “Dolly” Cooper Veterans Memorial Cemetery Anderson, SC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the USMC Toys for Tots program in his memory.
