Get up-to-date on PFAS containment systems at an upcoming webinar with Professor Kerry Rowe.
Prof. Rowe will speak on ‘Latest findings regarding PFAS containment by modern liner systems: the good news – and the bad!’ at the IGS Technical Committee on Barrier Systems (TC-B) event on July 21.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can be present in landfills, landfill leachate ponds and sewage lagoons. Geomembranes are a vital part of the barrier system that contains PFAS in these facilities.
Prof. Rowe will discuss concentrations of PFAS with an emphasis on Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). Other examples will also be considered, including the Gen X manufacturing technique, in terms of modes of contaminant transport (diffusion and advection/leakage) and the potential impact on the service life of the geomembrane.
He will also share some recently published data and insights following current research and papers in review by the Queen’s University research team including the implications of the contaminating lifespan of landfills.
Prof. Rowe has a distinguished career in geosynthetics with a professional practice and research that has covered a broad range of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. He is currently the Canada Research Chair in Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering at Queen’s University, Canada. He is a former president of the IGS, the Canadian Geotechnical Society and the Engineering Institute of Canada.
The TC-B webinar will conclude with a brief Q&A and panel discussion.
The session takes place on July 21 and is repeated on July 28. Register as follows:
