A lively audience enjoyed the IGS Pan-American Committee’s first webinar in Spanish.
Some 83 participants heard Denys Parra speak on ‘Geosynthetics in Mining’ last month, and submitted a range of interesting questions during the event and via a survey afterwards. These included:
-
- How useful are conductive geomembranes?
- Who determines what type of geomembrane should be used?
- Is it possible to replace low hydraulic conductivity soil with geocells or a GCL to waterproof a slope?
- Which geomembrane performs best on floating decks?
- What steps must be taken to create safe and economical designs?
During the webinar Mr Parra, general manager of Anddes in Peru, explored the use of geosynthetics in areas such as waste rock dumps, tailings dams, heap leach pads, tailings storage facilities, and ponds.
Professor Timothy D. Stark, IGS Pan-American Regional Activities Committee Lead, explained it was important to offer information and research results in native languages because most of the practitioners and students were not fluent in English.
He added: “I am confident these webinars will significantly increase IGS participation in Central and South America. This initiative is also supported by a Spanish IGS Pan-American Committee LinkedIn site that distributes timely information on geosynthetics.”
A recording of the webinar, and a podcast featuring Mr Parra answering all the questions posed in the survey, will be posted on the Fabricated Geomembrane Institute website soon. See here for updates.
IGS Pan-American Committee webinars in Spanish coming soon include:
-
- May 18, 12pm CDT: Jorge Zornberg will discuss ‘Ingenuity in the design of geotechnical works using geosynthetics’. Register here
- July 13, 12pm CDT: Javier Castro will speak on ‘Granular base mechanical stabilization with geogrid in Honduras’. Register here
- August 26, 11am CDT: Ennio Palmeria will talk on ‘Sustainable solutions in reinforced soil geosynthetics’. This will be in Portuguese to accommodate the Committee’s many followers in Brazil. Register here.
Further webinars are planned for October 12 and November 30 with topics and presenters to be announced.
