The Italian Chapter of the IGS told a virtual audience about a range of innovative geosynthetics solutions to manage sediment and sludge.
Six speakers attended the digital version of four-day green technologies exhibition and conference Ecomondo on November 3-6. The annual event, which usually attracts around 120,000 visitors, is normally held in the northern Italian coastal town of Rimini but coronavirus restrictions necessitated an online event.
Geosynthetics engineering was in the spotlight on November 4 with a half-day event themed ‘Innovative geotechnical solutions for the management of sediments and sludges’. Co-organized by the Scientific Committee of Ecomondo, the Italian Geotechnical Society (AGI) and the Italian Chapter of the IGS (AGI-IGS), the conference was co-chaired by IGS Italy chapter president Daniele Cazzuffi and Nicola Moraci, the AGI president.
Contributors were:
-
-
- Giorgia Quadri, of consulting engineering group Ramboll, who spoke on the management of contaminated sediments with examples of American, Norwegian, Dutch and German approaches.
- Claudio di Prisco, of Milan Polytechnic, presented on the stability of excavation faces connected to the emptying of reservoirs for the decantation of sewage sludges.
- Riccardo Berardi, of the University of Genoa, and Marco Vaccari, of Ports of Genoa, discussed the management and reuse of dredged sediments in port areas. They shared details of the design and construction of two new container terminals with complex geotechnical aspects.
- Mirko Felici, of the Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona, presented the outcome of the monitoring of a preload with vertical drains field test aimed at designing consolidation of dredged sediments in a confined disposal facility. The study became a reference model for the design of a new container terminal area within the port of Ancona.
- Quintilio Napoleoni, of Sapienza University of Rome, discussed the different solutions involved in the mass stabilization for treatment of contaminated sediments, with case studies from Italy and Scandinavia.
- Alberto Simini, of Huesker Italy, talked about sludge lagoon cover systems using geosynthetics. The calculation and installation of reinforcing geosynthetics in these extreme geotechnical conditions were discussed.

Daniele Cazzuffi said: “These workshops were an outstanding success in terms of overall participation, quality of the contributions and the online discussions.
“Ecomondo is a key event for us to share the latest thinking on geosynthetics in environmental applications and we’re delighted it went ahead online.”
