IGS President Chungsik Yoo and Secretary General Edoardo Zannoni did their bit to boost collaboration across the geo-engineering community at a recent event.
Chungsik and Edoardo attended the Federation of International Geo-Engineering Societies (FedIGS) board meeting in September.
FedIGS is a collaborative forum within which learned societies or associations involved in engineering with, on, or in geo-materials, can meet and interact.
Members of FedIGS include:
- International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE)
- International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM)
- International Association of Engineering Geology (IAEG)
- International Geosynthetics Society (IGS)
The meeting in Iguassu, Brazil, on September 14th, was held in conjunction with the 14th International Congress on Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering. The full-day event aimed to facilitate interaction among the member societies, allowing them to explore opportunities to promote their common interests and provide a unified response to common issues. Nine board members attended, with each society having at least one representative present.
Specific issues discussed included coordination of events diaries to avoid clashes, the potential expansion of the FedIGS by adding new members and FedIGS strategy.
The FedIGS Joint Technical Committees on Natural Slopes and Landslides, Representation of Geo-Engineering Data, and Education and Training, also presented reports on their recent activities and forthcoming plans.
Chungsik said: “Our interaction with member societies of the FedIGS helps us to ensure the ideas and concerns of IGS members are heard more widely across the geo-engineering community. We look forward to further cooperation and the exchange of news about best practice and technical breakthroughs that will follow from this event.”
The next FedIGS meeting will be held in Warsaw in September 2020 in conjunction with the EuroGeo 7 event. To find out more about FedIGS, visit https://www.geoengineeringfederation.org
